Hello, The spare piece would be called the stabilizer bar and it is used when converting the crib into the next stage which is the daybed/toddler bed. Thank you : )

The drawers have a curvature that follows the curvature of the piece, in other words, they are not square. Let us know if that was the problem you where having during your assembly. What were you doing wrong? I can't figure this out after hours of trying. Any advice?
